Rocket League Is Going Free-to-play Soon
Developer Psyonix just announced that Rocket League — the game where you play soccer with the use of RC-like vehicles — will be free-to-play on all platforms it’s currently in, and it will still feature cross-platform play.
Based on the Rocket League’s official post about Rocket League going free-to-play, the core gameplay remains intact with improvements done to Tournaments, Challenges, and cross-platform progression.
Players that have played the game from when the game was launched to July 21 will receive a Faded Cosmos Boost and Legacy status, which provides new items like a Golden Cosmos Boost, Dieci-Oro Wheels, a Huntress Player Banner, an Est, 20XX title, past Rocket League-branded DLCs that you don’t own, and 200+ “Common” items will be upgraded to “legacy” quality. All of this will be available once the game fully converts to a free-to-play model.
Sadly, Rocket League will no longer be available for download to new users on Steam once the game goes free-to-play. New players starting out will have to resort to playing the game on the Epic Games store when it goes free-to-play. Those that have the game on Steam can continue to play the game on that platform with continued support from Pysonix.
The developer plans to share more details to further clarify the transition to the new business model very soon.
