State of Decay 3 Gameplay Revealed at Xbox Games Showcase, Still Going Multi-platform
The 2026 Xbox Games Showcase revealed our first look at State of Decay 3 gameplay, showing that the third title is still delivering an open-world game about base building, managing multiple survivors, and scavenging.
State of Decay is one of the original survivor experiences before base-building survival games became a thing, and it looks like the series is slowly evolving in that direction. Beyond the third game being bigger in scale (four times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map, the studio claims), multiplayer sounds like an integral part of State of Decay 3. Shared worlds allow players to contribute to a single world on their own time, building upon it as you work on multiple bases and progress through the game. Multiplayer can be up to 4 players.
Sounds familiar, but it's an inevitable evolution for the series given how many base-building survival games have emerged with different themes, like Valheim, Subnautica 2, just to name a few. These games are different in their own right, but they all scratch a similar itch.
State of Decay 3 will be Multi-platform
With Xbox putting more weight on the Xbox console brand through the return of exclusive titles (Gears of War: E-Day, Clockwork Revolution), Undead Labs and Xbox confirm that State of Decay 3 will be available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, Game Pass, and PlayStation 5 sometime in 2027. They're not going all-in on exclusivity just yet, simply bringing it back to the table.
Those interested in trying out State of Decay 3 can opt to register for the game’s closed playtests currently ongoing.
